The Firebird Ignites Olympic Flame – Stravinsky in Sochi

firebird_olympicFor 123 days, the Olympic Torch has been carried from Greece to Sochi, Russia, and it has at last reached its goal. Following the 65,000 kilometre run is an opening ceremony on 7 February, during which fans of classical music will be especially pleased with the inclusion of Igor Stravinsky’s 1945 THE FIREBIRD ballet suite. The choice is not merely musical: after all, the form of the lit torch recalls the magical feather of the Russian mythical bird. But whether the Firebird will also be lit alongside the Olympic Flame is still a well-kept secret, not to be disclosed until Friday afternoon at 6:00 UTC.
